Digital Stamps for Card Making

As I am spring cleaning my work room, I am beginning to realize that I hate rubber stamps! Why you ask? Here are my reasons:

Rubber stamps take up valuable and limited storage space.
Unless you make cards all of the time, how much use can you get from one stamp?
They are expensive. I shudder to think what I have spent on this pile alone.
Ink is messy, it dries out and is expensive.
It may take several tries to get your stamp just right on the paper - wasted paper is expensive too.
The stamp is not always the right size for my project.

I will not give up stamping but I have discovered digital stamps. If you don't know, digital stamps are images that you can print directly from your own computer and printer. If you have Microsoft Word or any photo editing software, you can do it. Just find a design you like, purchase and download. You will have an image that is not going to take up space in your craft room, does not require a messy ink pad and can be re-sized to fit your project. Many sites offer freebie sections and tutorials to get you started.

Sharp Scissors for Ribbons and Fabric

Nothing dulls scissors more than paper. Keep a separate pair of scissors just for cutting ribbon and fabric scraps. You may need to find a hiding place for your fabric scissors to keep them away from family members.

Attaching Ribbons to Cards

Use double-sided adhesive tape that is thinner than the ribbon. If the tape wider, cut it or make sure it is covered by something else. What you want to avoid is having an uncovered sticky surface or messy glue marks. As an example, I used double-sided tape to adhere the ribbon on this handmade baby shower card:

To make sure you keep the ribbon straight, lightly make a pencil mark with a ruler as a guide. Cover the pencil line with the ribbon.

If you don't already have a stockpile of ribbon and can go shopping, the perfect thing is adhesive ribbon especially made for scrap booking and cards.

Card Making Tip - Using Glue Dots

Use a non-permanent adhesive when assembling and designing your card. Once you get the placement just right and the card is perfect, use your tape runner or your favorite adhesive. It is discouraging to make a card and then realize that something is not right. I get the best result if I lay my card out with embellishments lightly attached and come back and look at it later. I almost always change something.

Glue dots are perfect for temporarily attaching things and are among my favorite card making tools and supplies. Check them out at Amazon.com: Glue Dots 3/8-Inch Memory Dot Roll, 300-Clear Dots When you are satisfied with your work, gently peel them off and use a more permanent adhesive.

Working with Chalk

This week I am going to learn to work with chalk. I bought some a few months ago and have not used it yet because I just don't know how. I do like the soft pastel look of chalking as opposed to using a coloring pencil. I will keep you posted on how it is going and fill you in on any tips along the way.
